This is popular trail used by nomads of Dagala during their migration (shifting of pastureland). The trail goes along the ridge between Thimphu and Wangdi valleys. It is a good combination of a trek with cultiure as you visit temples and walk through farm lands and the forest.

Day 1

  • Arrive at Paro International Airport after having experienced an enthralling flight with peaks of the mighty Himalayas, including Mt Everest greeting you and the plane taking you through the awesome Bhutanese foothills, not to mention the thrilling landing at what is considered one of the most challenging landings.
  • Our company’s representative will welcome you at the airport and escort you to the hotel and take you to the hotel in Paro. You will be served a welcome drink.
  • Stroll around Paro town, which was developed after the airport was built in 1983.

Day 1

  • Stroll around Paro town, which was developed after the airport was built in 1983.
  • Visit Ta Dzong (watch tower) which was built in 1649 by Paro Governor Tenzin Drugda to protect the fortress below.  It was almost destroyed in 1965 by a fire and was restored by the third king Jigme
    Dorji Wangchuck into the National Museum of Bhutan in 1968.
  • Visit Paro Dzong which was built in 1646 by Zhabdrung Rimpoche.  It was built to protect Paro Valley from frequent Tibetan invasions.  Today this Dzong serves as the administrative office of Paro district and the district’s monk body.
  • Visit Kichu Lhakhang which was founded by Tibetan king Songtshen Gyambo in 659 AD.  It was built to subjugate the demon occupied lands all over the Himalayas, who the spread of Buddhism.  The
    king built 108 temples in a day to overcome the demon.
  • Over night at hotel in Paro.

Day 2 Paro

  • Hike to Tiger’s Nest (Taktshang) Monastery, one of the holiest monastery in the Buddhist World
  • Over night at hotel in Paro.

Day 3 Thimphu

Drive to Thimphu and visit the Memorial Chorten of the Third King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, also called the Father of Modern Bhutan.  The Chorten was built in 1974 by Her Royal Grand Mother Ashi Phuntsho Choden Wangchuck.  Today it is a popular worship place in Thimphu city.  You will see many elderly men and women circling the chorten and chanting prayers.

  • Visit Zorichusum (meaning 13 arts and crafts) which is popularly known as the painting school.  Students in this school learn traditional arts and crafts like painting, sculpture, wood carving,
    weaving and embroidery.
  • Visit the Changangkha Temple (built in the 15th century by famous Lama Nyima).  Inside the temple is a statue of the “God of Compassion” made out of platinum.  You may witness a newborn baby being blessed.
  • Visit the Buddha Statue, one of the world’s largest.
  • Evening we will visit Tashichoe Dzong, the seat of Bhutanese polity, which has the King’s Office, Throne Room and is the summer residence of the Je Khenpo (Chief Abbot) and the Central Monk Body.
  • Over night hotel in Thimphu.

Day 4

Distance 5 km

  • After breakfast, drive to Dochula Pass, a 45 minute drive from Thimphu.

The trek begins, from Dochula pass into forests on the right side of the road. The trail starts with an ascend through the Hemlock forest and through different vegetation zones, until we see the 14th century old temple,  Lungchutshe Monastery. The camp site at 3,530m. We gain an altitude of  550m.

Day 5

Altitude gain 340m, Altitude loss 450m, Distance 6 km

  • Walk along the ridge through the dense fir vegetation. The trail gradually climbs along the ridges. After three hours of walking, the trail drops down into thick hemlock forests and we reach an open camp site with a small stupa on the Helila pass.
  • Day 6

Altitude gain 0 m., Altitude loss 1250, Distance 6.5km.

  • Trail drops down to Khujulakha village in Wangdiphodrang.
  • This is an old trail earlier used by people of Thimphu and Wangdiphodrang as the main trail. Trail goes through pine and mixed forests, including pine forest. It is a good opportunity to see lots of birds.
    Near a small village, the driver will be waiting with refreshment.
  • Drive to Hotel in Wangdiuephodrang.
  • Afternoon visit ruins of the Wangdiphodrang Dzong, built by Zhabdrung Rimpoche in 1638 and ruined by a tragic fire in 2012.
  • Next, walk around Rinchengang village, located opposite to Wangdi Dzong. The people here have origins from India and came to Bhutan about around 500 years ago. All the houses are built together in one place.
  • Over night at hotel in Punakha

Day 7

  • Visit Punakha Dzong which played an important role in the olden days.  It was Bhutan’s second monastic school after Cheri Monastery.  The first king was crowned inside this Dzong in 1907. It is winter residence of the Je Khenpo (Chief Abbot) and the Central Monk Body.
  • Hike to Chemi Lhakhang through rice fields and farm houses.  The temple was built by Lama Ngawang Chogyel in 1499 and is today a popular temple where barren women come to
    pray for a child.  The temple is popularly known as the Fertility Temple.
  • We drive back to Paro.
  • Over night at hotel in Paro.

Day 8 Depature

  • You will be escorted to the airport for departure.
